New high-resolution galaxy shots

ESO, the European Southern Observatory has published new impressive pictures made by the VST-Tube-System showing star-forming region Messier 17, also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula and the best portrait of the globular star cluster Omega Centauri ever made. Full resolution(!) and plenty of beautiful outer space pictures are available on the ESO page.

Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)

Carrying a 2.5-metre telescope inside a modified Boeing 747SP, the airborne observatory performs astronomical observations in the infrared and submillimetre wavelengths, high above the disturbance of Earth’s atmosphere. Watch the video here for more details.

Laniakea supercluster of galaxies

Scientist R. Brent Tully and colleagues mapped superclusters of galaxies to show us how tiny little our planet/planetary system is in comparison. “Galaxies congregate in clusters and along filaments, and are missing from large regions referred to as voids. These structures are seen in maps derived from spectroscopic surveys1, 2 that reveal networks of structure that are interconnected with no clear boundaries.”
